3 fun things

By Jon Waterhouse
For the AJC
MARIETTA
Not Your Average Organ Recital at St. James’ Episcopal Church
Steven Schneider, director of music at St. James’, says to leave your expectations at the door. No paint-by-numbers concert here. Schneider says this hodgepodge of music — not typically heard at an organ recital — will include selections from the 1986 film “The Mission,” the cartoon soundtrack-friendly music of Edvard Grieg, and various classical pieces from the 16th to 21st centuries. He’ll also perform music written by two women, Canada’s Rachel Laurin and the late American composer, Allen Orton Gibbs. A reception with Schneider follows the one-hour show.
5 p.m. Sept. 9. Free. St. James’ Episcopal Church, 161 Church St., Marietta. 770-428-5841, https://stjames-marietta.episcopalatlanta.org.
MABLETON
Almost Elton John and the Rocket Band at Mable House Amphitheatre
We may have more Elton John sightings in Atlanta than your average city. But soon that statistic will double. Performer Craig A. Meyer, a John doppelgänger, is set to bang on the 88 keys with Almost Elton John, his seriously detailed tribute to the rock piano man. Backed by The Rocket Band, Meyer may sing “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” but he’ll be saying “hello” to the familiar melodies found in John’s catalog. Meyer doesn’t just sing the tunes, but dons those trademark costumes, too. Yacht Rock Schooner opens with its smooth sounds of the ’70s.
7 p.m. Sept. 7. $16-$39.16 plus Ticketmaster fees. Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre, 5239 Floyd Road, Mableton. 800-745-3000, www.ticketmaster.com.
PEACHTREE CITY
The Warriors Concert at the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater
This benefit lends a hand to The Wounded Warrior Project by pitching a concert featuring a variety of musical styles from area bands. From the jazz stylings of The FlyCats to the southern-fried rock of Big Jake, there may be something for most everyone. Other acts include Lights Out, Leadfoot, Final Answer Band and Gravity. To help bolster the theme, the Bennett’s Mill Middle School Chorus, Band and Orchestra kicks off the evening with a set of patriotic songs. Although the show officially starts at 6 p.m., organizers suggest guests arrive early for a flag ceremony by a local Color Guard. Local Wounded Warriors will be giving inspirational speeches about how The Wounded Warrior Project has helped them.
6 p.m. Sept. 8. $15-$25. Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater, 201 McIntosh Trail, Peachtree City. 770-631-0630, www.ticketalternative.com.

In terms of size, Yellow Daisy is off the chain!!

By Howard Pousner
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
What’s more impressive? That 200,000 are projected to attend the Yellow Daisy Festival? Or that they are expected to consume 2,500 pounds of funnel cake batter?
Don’t fret about festival-goers eating all that fried stuff when the 44th edition opens its four-day run Thursday. Organizers estimate that guests strolling the 1 1/2 miles of winding paths between crafter tents will burn 30 million calories.
Stone Mountain Park bills Yellow Daisy as the South’s largest outdoor arts and crafts fest. We didn’t have quite enough time to traverse the region to confirm the claim but by many statistical measures, the fest comes up XXL.
Yellow Daisy Festival by the numbers
  • 445 artists
  • 31 states represented among the artists
  • 300,000 estimated miles walked by festival attendees
  • 50,000 shopping bags to be distributed
  • 1,344 festival T-shirts printed
  • 33,600 bottles of beverage quaffed
  • 18 tons of ice used to chill those bottles and other drinks
  • 3,000 pounds of landscaping mulch spread
  • 133 informational signs placed
  • 18 live performances
  • 84.7 percent women in attendance
  • 5 large-screen TVs tuned to football in the Men’s Den (a place to where countless of the 15.3 percent of men in attendance will escape)
Yellow Daisy Festival
10 a.m.-6 p.m. Thursday-Friday, 10 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday. Festival is free; parking is $10 for one day, or $35 for an annual pass. Stone Mountain Park Special Events Meadow, U.S. 78 E., Exit 8. 770-498-5690, www.stonemountainpark.com.

First Saturday of the month, 3pm. Just $39.
Frequently Asked Questions:How large are the tour groups?

The number of people will vary depending on the tour, but most groups will be limited to no more than 16. This makes the tour more manageable for both the guides and the restaurants.
How much does a tour cost?

Price of each tour is listed on its description page. Pricing for private or custom tours will vary. Please contact us to discuss private tour pricing.
What should I wear?

Most of our tours are walking tours, so wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes. It’s not a good idea to wear high heels or dress shoes. Check the weather on the day of your tour and dress appropriately – we’ll conduct our tours hot, cold, rain or shine. Don’t forget sunglasses, sunscreen, hats, coats or umbrellas depending on the weather. We will only cancel or reschedule if weather conditions are dangerous - we’ll contact you by email if this occurs.
Can I bring my camera?

Sure! There are lots of opportunities to take pictures during the tours.
Can I bring my dog?

Sorry, no pets. We’re visiting restaurants, and pets aren’t allowed unless they are service dogs.
Can I bring my kids?

Probably no. You’ll have to make that call, based on your child’s age/maturity, but most of our tours are not set up for children. The samplings at some of the restaurants may feature alcohol or may not suit the palate of children that are “particular.” If you’re not sure, then don’t.
How much food will we be eating?

Word to the wise: Come Hungry! There are enough tastings that most people will not need a meal afterwards. If you’re still hungry once the tour is over, feel free to go back to your favorite stop for more!
I have allergies!

We’re not doctors, but if you have allergies or sensitivities to any foods or items used in food production, it’s safe to assume that absolutely everything served on this tour is or contains an allergen of some sort. We encourage you to use the same discretion that has enabled you to live a full and healthy life to this point!
Will I need to bring cash?

Our tours are all inclusive, but it’s a good idea to have some extra cash on hand for souvenirs, gifts, an extra dessert to bring home, etc.
When should I arrive for the tour?

It’s very important that you arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled start time. We leave on time. If you’re running late, your confirmation will have a contact number to call.
Should I tip my tour guide?

In the tourism industry, it is customary to tip your guide. For Private Tours, a gratuity will be added to your total cost.
I need to cancel/reschedule. Is

NOW IS THE TIME TO BUY OR SELL A HOME!!

I am truly sorry for the delay in new postings for this blog. The real estate market is really pickup steam and taking off again like we have not seen in some 5 years. So if you have been wondering if you can qualify to buy a home please contact me. I can get you to a professional you can show you how to qualify to buy.

There are programs that will still let you purchase with no money for down payment, ( VA loans. THANK YOU TO ALL VETERANS PAST AND PRESENT FOR YOUR SERVICE TO THIS COUNTRY. And farmers home loans, no not for farms! There are requirements, you may qualify!

There is a loan that will GIVE you $4 for every $1 in down payment you put up. That mean your $1,000 down now becomes $5,000 in down payment. Again there are requirements.

You can still buy a home for you and your family for LESS than rent on the same home would be. Not all homes are foreclosures that are wrecked. A lot can be moved into and then made your own over time.

If you have thought about selling NOW IS THE TIME. With foreclosures up but banks still not releasing 1% for sale here in Gwinnett County our inventories are down.

Prices and demand are improving. You may be surprised to see what your home could sell for now as oppossed to a year ago.

Please contact me for a free valuation on your home to sell or if you are serious about buying a home.

•• Hands-On< >< > Grown-ups step aside, the kids are manning the grill at this party. All the food at this BBQ is “hands-on”… the only thing you’ll need a fork for is the beans! Kids learn basic grilling techniques as they prepare three different kinds of mini burgers, or “sliders”, packed with summer flavors, along with some super sides and an old-fashioned dessert, all the while building their kitchen techniques and even a little math. They can serve these recipes at home for snacks, appetizers, or any summer cook out. MENU: Caprese Salad Brochettes; Outside-In Beef & Cheddar Sliders; Tex-Mex Black Bean Sliders with Avocado Ranch Sauce; Georgia Shrimp Sliders with Wasabi Mayo; Grilled Corn on the Cob with Lime Butter; Root Beer Baked Beans; and Cherry Hand Pies.
