Not Your Average Organ Recital at St. James’ Episcopal Church
Steven Schneider, director of music at St. James’, says to leave your expectations at the door. No paint-by-numbers concert here. Schneider says this hodgepodge of music — not typically heard at an organ recital — will include selections from the 1986 film “The Mission,” the cartoon soundtrack-friendly music of Edvard Grieg, and various classical pieces from the 16th to 21st centuries. He’ll also perform music written by two women, Canada’s Rachel Laurin and the late American composer, Allen Orton Gibbs. A reception with Schneider follows the one-hour show.

Almost Elton John and the Rocket Band at Mable House Amphitheatre
We may have more Elton John sightings in Atlanta than your average city. But soon that statistic will double. Performer Craig A. Meyer, a John doppelgänger, is set to bang on the 88 keys with Almost Elton John, his seriously detailed tribute to the rock piano man. Backed by The Rocket Band, Meyer may sing “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” but he’ll be saying “hello” to the familiar melodies found in John’s catalog. Meyer doesn’t just sing the tunes, but dons those trademark costumes, too. Yacht Rock Schooner opens with its smooth sounds of the ’70s.

The Warriors Concert at the Frederick Brown Jr. Amphitheater
This benefit lends a hand to The Wounded Warrior Project by pitching a concert featuring a variety of musical styles from area bands. From the jazz stylings of The FlyCats to the southern-fried rock of Big Jake, there may be something for most everyone. Other acts include Lights Out, Leadfoot, Final Answer Band and Gravity. To help bolster the theme, the Bennett’s Mill Middle School Chorus, Band and Orchestra kicks off the evening with a set of patriotic songs. Although the show officially starts at 6 p.m., organizers suggest guests arrive early for a flag ceremony by a local Color Guard. Local Wounded Warriors will be giving inspirational speeches about how The Wounded Warrior Project has helped them.
